The unconventional Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was first used to consolidate micrometric austenitic stainless steel 316L powder. Various shapes (figure) were in-situ processed in order to perform the mechanical properties without additional sample shaping. Process parameters (time, temperature and pressure) were varied over wide ranges and the impact of such variations on processed materials was studied through the investigation of their microstructures, densities, and hardness and corrosion resistance. The results showed that, the SPS allows: (i) to control the grain growth and (ii) obtain the high dense samples. The mechanical characterization leads to the enhancement of hardness up (237 ±4 HV // 209 ±3 HV). The correlation between processing conditions, microstructures generated and mechanical strength behavior using Hall-Petch law of the stainless steel are discussed.

On the other hand, the SPS allows to obtain MgB2-based ceramics with tailored microstructures. Secondly, the MgB2 bulk superconductors were shaping using also SPS process. In addition, the SPS equipment was modified with the aim of texturing the p-type oxide and inter-metallic thermoelectric bulk as Ca3Co4O9 and Bi2Te2 respectively. Finally, the possibility for processing oxide compounds by SPS under air atmosphere and overcome the reducing problem due to the low oxygen partial pressure (graphitic environment, dynamic vacuum or neutral atmosphere) was investigated and will be also discussed.
