Space, the final frontier is in dyer need of cleaning; according to NASA, “the Earth’s orbit has been made a mess by space junk.” With that said it needs to be cleaned up. Apparently they had a handle on things, but NASA further explains that: “two events in the past four years — a 2007 Chinese anti-satellite weapon test and a 2009 crash-in-orbit of two satellites — put so much new junk in space that everything changed.”
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency called “Catcher’s Mitt” has mentioned, ” harpoons, nets, tethers, magnets and even a giant dish or umbrella-shaped device, that would sweep up tiny pieces of debris,” and the ”think-tank” which is also an arm of the Defense Department has outlined all sorts of unusual techniques.”
Donald Kessner, who headed the National Academy of Sciences says; he likes one company’s idea of a satellite that is armed with nets that could be sprung on wayward junk. Attached to the net is an electromagnetic tether that could either pull the junk down to a point where it would burn up harmlessly or boost it to safer orbit.
This is an opportunity for scientists, aspiring scientists, artists, architects or any creative mind who think they might be able to come up with a technique that can get the job done.
