FreedomSpeaks.com is a start-up with the aim of facilitating civic participation and activism. The site is politically neutral, and has the primary goal of letting its users communicate with government representatives. Registered users can write government officials, and FreedomSpeaks sends the letters by fax or e-mail free of charge. In fact the whole site is completely free for any ordinary citizen, as long as he or she is not in office or running for office. It is not however, a non-profit organization, the site makes its money through advertisements and monthly subscription fees (for organizations, corporations, politicians). Helpfully, users can also get access to a database which tells them precisely who their elected officials are, from the local levels on up.

Now that the internet has become such a powerful tool for political activism and grassroots movements, a site like this could have a bright future. I am unaware if there are other similar sites for countries other than the U.S.
